GM Recalls New 717,950 Vehicles

General Motors said it was executing six more recalls on Wednesday that involve 717,950 newer-model vehicles in the US following several flaws.

The latest development brings the total number of GM recalls so far this year to 60, involving a total of 26.41 million vehicles.

The US automaker acknowledged three crashes and two injuries emanating from the fresh recalls. The flaws are not tied to any fatalities, the company said.

GM views its latest recall as a demonstration that it’s resolved to keep self-policing itself to reinforce vehicle safety.

“These recalls signify how we’ve enhanced our approach to safety,” said Jeff Boyer, vice president in charge of global vehicle safety. We are bringing greater rigor and discipline to our analysis and decision making. If we identify an issue – large or small – that might affect the safety of our customers, we will act decisively,” vice president of global auto safety Jeff Boyer is quoted by USA Today as saying.

Director of residual values for KBB.com said GM may find it easier to proceed on that path, aware of the fact the many recalls it has executed have not have an adverse effect on its car sales, resale and trade-in prices.

GM and Ford Motor are expected to announce earnings for the second-quarter on Thursday. GM will take a $1.2 billion charge to offset second-quarter recalls. Nevertheless, analysts anticipate the company will announce solid results.

According to Reuters, the recall involving the largest number of vehicles on Wednesday resulted from a likely loose bolt in front seats with power adjusting systems for a number of vehicles manufactured between 2010 and 2012.

Although most of recalls GM has made this year affected mostly older models, many of the vehicles affected by the Wednesday announcement are current models. The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks, are the automaker’s bestselling products, were hit by the recall.
