Pollsters are not resting after their success with predicting the results of the first round of the French presidential elections. Both the average of opinion polls and the exit polls foresaw the results of the first four candidates in an amazing accuracy.
Daily opinion polls show a clear picture: Emmanuel Macron will be the next president of the French Republic and by a wide margin.
- Opinionway shows Macron at 61% against 39%, below the 64% seen beforehand, but still a huge gap.
- IFOP puts Macron at 60% against 40%.
Both gaps seem insurmountable. However, voters may become complacent. It isn’t over until it’s over. Melenchon’s refusal to endorse Macron could lead some of his voters to back Le Pen.
Other voters could just feel disgusted with both candidates and prefer to stay at home. Marine Le Pen’s father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, lost by 82% to 18% against Jacques Chirac back in 2012. French voters went out to vote against extremism.
This time the race will be closer.
